Andrew Paxton was the good-hearted assistant to Margaret Tate from Sitka, Alaska, who wishes to be promoted to editor and have his manuscript published. He agrees to the fake marriage on the terms that those 2 conditions are met. It is later revealed his family is rich (seemingly owning the entire town), but Andrew himself is estranged from his father, who wishes he would take over the family business. Andrew begins to fall in love with Margaret after coming to know her in Alaska and genuinely wants to marry her. Hence, when she confesses the sham, he proposes all over again, and they get engaged "for real".

Notable Relationships[]

Margaret Tate[]

Originally, Andrew was no more than a usefull assistant to Margaret and Margaret was no more than a fearsome and bitchy boss to Andrew. However when Margaret discovered she was being deported, she concocted a lie and then forced Andrew to marry her by threatening him with his job. He grudgingly complied but blackmailed her with him getting a promotion and him getting to tell his family his way.

First kiss with Andrew. They flew to Sitka and on the way he annoyed her with small things like refusing to help her with luggage and throwing a bag in the water by "accident". While they both told the story of the engagement, they insulted each other quietly without anyone noticing and at night, Margaret slept in the bed while he slept on the floor. Andrew started taking advantage of the lie by hugging her and rubbing her ass and saying that his family shouldn't see them arguing. The living arrangements were occasionally slightly awkward and one day, they accidentally ran into each other naked.

Margaret grew close to Andrew and one night, she revealed to him many details about her life and he told her she was beautiful. After speaking with Gammy she brought Andrew onto a boat and told him that they shouldn't do it because he could lose everything and his family was wonderfull. However, he convinced her to continue with the plan. On the wedding day, Margaret interrupted Ramone and told everyone the truth. She left the barn and went on a boat back to New York. At New York, she packed away her final things and as she asked an employee to take a box, she saw Andrew who told her he loved her and wanted to marry her. She kissed him and he took it as a yes.

Joe Paxton[]

Andrew and his father did not get along well. His father wished for him to take over one of the many businesses but Andrew wished to be an editor, something Joe didn't understand. Joe and Andrew argued about his career to the point that Andrew ended up viciously attacking a canoe with an axe.

Gertude[]

Gertrude and Andrew dated through college. After they graduated, Andrew asked her to elope with him but she didn't want to leave her home so she said no. When he returned to Sitka, they remained friends. It was after speaking with Gert that Andrew decided to get Margaret back.

Colleagues[]

Before he fell in love with Margaret Tate, like everyone else, Andrew feared and despised Margaret. He was so scared of her that he would order the exact same coffee for himself that Margaret liked in case he spilled hers. On one occasion he did spill coffee and was liked enough to be given a shirt by an employee almost immediately.

Character Information[]

Andrew Paxton is Always Late[]

Andrew realizing he has woken up late

"Shit!"

- Andrew Paxton realizing he is going to be late for work

Andrew Paxton is often late for work. A possible explanation for this could be Margaret Tate's take-no-prisoners management style, which causes Andrew Paxton to be overworked. As a result, Andrew Paxton does not get the optimum number of hours of sleep. Andrew Paxton also relies on an alarm clock to wake him up in the morning, which can cause him to wake up late if the alarm clock were to fail.

Andrew Paxton Tries Hard to Impress His Boss[]

Andrew spills coffee

Andrew spills Margaret's coffee

Andrew Paxton is a man who has worked hard for many years as Colden Book's executive editor in chief's secretary. Despite being overworked and quite possibly underpaid as well, Andrew Paxton continues to work hard, as he believes that his hard work will one day land him a promotion, and he will finally get his dream job, Margaret Tate's position, a book editor.

Andrew asks for shirt

Andrew asks a colleague for his shirt

"I need the shirt off your back. Literally."

- Andrew Paxton asking a colleague for his shirt

Besides working hard to earn himself a promotion, Andrew Paxton also does other things to impress his boss, Margaret Tate. For example, Andrew Paxton tries his best to arrive at work earlier than Margaret Tate. He also buys 2 cups of coffee every morning without fail, one for himself and another for Margaret Tate.

Andrew impressing his boss

Andrew waiting for Margaret, after changing shirts

One morning, after rushing to the office because his alarm clock failed to ring, Andrew Paxton accidentally spills Margaret Tate's coffee. This causes Andrew Paxton to not only lose Margaret Tate's coffee, but also stain his white shirt. To avoid giving Margaret Tate a bad impression, Andrew Paxton immediately gets one of his colleagues to lend him a clean shirt, so that he can look more professional. Fortunately for Andrew Paxton, his colleague agrees and he is able to get changed just in time before Margaret Tate enters her office.

Margaret noticing the coincidence

Margaret asks Andrew about her coffee

Margaret Tate: "So, you drink unsweetened cinnamon light soy lattes? Is that a coincidence?"

Andrew Paxton: "Incredibly, it is. I mean I wouldn't possibly drink the same coffee that you drink just in case yours spilled. That would be pathetic."

- Margaret Tate asking Andrew Paxton about her coffee

Besides making sure that his appearance is up to Margaret Tate's professional standards, Andrew Paxton also drinks the exact same coffee as Margaret Tate. Andrew Paxton does this for a reason, if anything were to cause Margaret Tate's coffee to spill, he can then give his coffee to Margaret Tate instead. When Margaret Tate arrives in the office, Andrew Paxton immediately hands over his coffee to Margaret Tate. However, Margaret Tate is able to tell that the coffee is not hers because of the flirtatious message that is written on the cup by the female barista. This allows Margaret Tate to deduce that her secretary buys 2 of the same coffee every morning just in case her coffee spills, which in her opinion, is pathetic.

Andrew required to work on weekends

Margaret telling Andrew to work on a weekend

Andrew Paxton is also, to some extent, a yes-man to his boss, Margaret Tate. After getting called pathetic by Margaret Tate, Andrew Paxton accompanies his boss to visit Bob Spaulding, who Margaret Tate fires for being lazy and incompetent.

After firing Bob Spaulding, Margaret Tate orders Andrew Paxton to have security take Bob's breakfront out of his office and put it in her conference room. Margaret Tate also orders Andrew Paxton to work on the coming weekend to help review Bob's files and manuscript. Despite Andrew Paxton's grandmother's upcoming birthday on the coming weekend, Andrew Paxton says yes to Margaret Tate.

Andrew Paxton is Not 100% a Yes-man[]

Margaret wants to Marry Andrew

Margaret saying that she's marrying Andrew

While it is true that Andrew Paxton says yes to most if not all the orders from Margaret Tate, he is not 100% a yes-man to his boss. When Margaret Tate finds out that her visa application has been denied, she immediately thinks of a solution, marrying Andrew Paxton. Without giving it much thought, Andrew Paxton immediately tells Margaret Tate no. However, Margaret Tate responds by telling him that Bob Spaulding will fire him the second she is gone, leaving Andrew Paxton with no choice but to agree.

Andrew refusing to help Margaret

Margaret Tate: "Promote you to editor? No, no way."

Andrew Paxton: "Then I quit, and you're screwed. Bye-bye, Margaret."

- Andrew blackmails Margaret

After agreeing to marry Margaret Tate, Andrew Paxton and Margaret Tate visit the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, where Andrew Paxton discovers that he is at risk of facing a $250,000 fine and five years in jail. This once again causes Andrew Paxton to say no to Margaret Tate, unless Margaret Tate agrees to promote him to editor, which she agrees.

Andrew Paxton Knows Many Things About His Boss[]

Andrew knows everything about Margaret

"So, these are the questions that INS is gonna ask us. Now the good news is I know everything about you, but the bad news is that you have four days to learn all this about me. So, you should probably get studying."

- Andrew tells Margaret he knows everything about her

As part of being a good secretary capable of impressing Margaret Tate, Andrew Paxton knows many things about her. During their flight to visit Andrew Paxton's family, Andrew Paxton tells Margaret Tate that he knows everything about her, but she does not know much about him. Refusing to believe Andrew Paxton, Margaret Tate asks Andrew Paxton a few questions about herself, such as her allergies and scars. To her surprise, Andrew Paxton is able to answer those questions correctly.

Andrew Paxton Gets Even With People Who Mistreat Him[]

Andrew helping his boss with ladder

Andrew touching his boss inappropriately

While it is true that Andrew Paxton does everything that the executive editor in chief of Colden Books tells him to do, he does not like working for her. In fact, Andrew Paxton often wishes something bad to happen to Margaret Tate because she is a terrible boss.

Realizing that Margaret Tate needs his help in order to keep her position as the executive editor in chief of Colden Books, Andrew Paxton decides to get even with Margaret Tate for all the times Margaret Tate mistreated him. For example, when Margaret Tate is struggling to climb down a ladder in Sitka, Andrew Paxton decides to "give her some support" by touching her butt.

Andrew Paxton: "Ask me nicely to marry you, Margaret."

Margaret Tate: "What does that mean?"

Andrew Paxton: "You heard me. On your knee."

- Andrew asking Margaret to get on her knees

Another example is outside the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. After agreeing to promote Andrew Paxton to editor, Margaret Tate is shocked to hear that Andrew Paxton wants her to get on her knees and ask him to marry her, which she reluctantly agrees.

Andrew Paxton is a Good Secretary[]

Margaret Tate: "Crap. Andrew, Andrew, phone. Andrew! Andrew, where is it?"

Andrew Paxton: "Purse, side pocket."

- Margaret asking Andrew for her phone

Andrew Paxton is a secretary who has been working for Margaret Tate for a long time. This has made him become very good at his job. During their first morning in Sitka, while Andrew Paxton and Margaret Tate are still in bed, Margaret Tate receives a phone call from Frank.

Despite being the owner of the phone, Margaret Tate is unable to find it, as she has forgotten the last place she left it. Luckily for Margaret Tate, Andrew Paxton knows her habits and tells Margaret Tate that her phone is in the side pocket of her purse.

After picking up the call, Margaret Tate leaves the room and goes outside because the phone reception is bad. During the call with Frank, Margaret Tate notices an eagle not too far away from the Paxton family's dog, Kevin. Margaret Tate manages to save the dog, but her phone gets snatched by the eagle in the process.

This causes Margaret Tate to panic a little. Being the good secretary that he is, Andrew Paxton shows up and tells Margaret Tate that he will order another phone with the same number and collect it in town the next day.

Andrew Paxton is Passionate About His Line of Work[]

Andrew does not want family business

Andrew insists on becoming an editor

"I feel sorry for you, Dad. I wish you had another son. I really do. One who wanted to stay here. One who wanted to take over the family business. One who wanted to marry someone that you approve of, but it's not me. Now, it must seem strange to you, my life in New York... sitting in an office, reading books. But it makes me happy. You understand?"

- Andrew to his father

After Margaret Tate is informed by Andrew Paxton that he will order a new phone, Margaret Tate goes on a family bonding event with Grace Paxton and Annie Paxton, leaving Andrew Paxton at home alone with his father. While home alone with his father, Andrew Paxton and his father get into a disagreement.

Despite being the son of the rich Paxton family with a successful family business, Andrew Paxton is not interested in taking over the family business. Andrew Paxton prefers working a 9 to 5 job in an office, reading books. Andrew Paxton's passion for books and refusal to take over the family business are the reasons why he does not get along with his father.

Andrew Paxton Listens to Music at High Volumes[]

Andrew unable to hear

"Andrew, honey, is everything okay?"

- Grace to Andrew, who is unable to hear her

Andrew Paxton has a habit of listening to music at high volumes. This is shown after the disagreement with his father. Andrew Paxton, feeling frustrated, decides to release his anger by viciously attacking a canoe with an axe. While taking out his anger on a canoe with an axe, Margaret Tate, Grace Paxton and Annie Paxton return home from their family bonding event. Realizing that something is not right with her son, Grace Paxton calls out to her son, who is unable to hear her because he is listening to music through his earphones at a high volume.

Unable to reach out to her son, Grace Paxton confronts her husband, while Annie Paxton tells Margaret Tate to leave Andrew Paxton alone, so Margaret Tate decides to return to her room to take a shower. While Grace Paxton is talking to her husband and Margaret Tate is taking a shower, Andrew Paxton enters the house and goes straight to his room, still unaware that his mother, grandmother and boss had returned home because of his habit of listening to loud music through his earphones.

Margaret Tate finishes her shower and discovers that she does not know where the towels are kept in the bathroom. While looking for the towels, Andrew Paxton enters the bedroom, still listening to music. Suspecting that she might have heard someone entering the bedroom, Margaret Tate hellos and waits for a response. However, Andrew Paxton does not reply because he has a habit of listening to music at high volumes.

Andrew Paxton Does Not See His boss as Human[]

Margaret notorious boss

The devil of a boss in her office

"It's Here!"

- Margaret Tate being labeled as an "It" in the office

Like most employees with lower job positions than Margaret Tate, the executive editor in chief at Colden Books, Andrew Paxton does not see Margaret Tate as a human being. Andrew Paxton absolutely hates Margaret Tate and only sees her as a devil of a boss who overworks him and wears expensive, highly corporate fashionable business suits and carries Hermès Birkin handbags.

Bathroom exit

Margaret Tate's bad reputation as a boss has even caused everyone to label her as an "It" instead of a "Her," which has, in a number of ways, caused Andrew Paxton to not see Margaret Tate as a human being. This bad impression of Margaret Tate that Andrew Paxton possesses really stands out during their time together in Sitka, Alaska.

This is especially true during their second day in Sitka, Alaska; when Margaret Tate walks out of the bathroom after taking a shower, where Andrew Paxton sees a more human side of his devil of a boss for the very first time, Margaret Tate in her birthday suit.

Andrew Paxton: "So... So naked."

Margaret Tate: "Can we, uh, not talk about that, please?"

- Andrew processing that he had seen Margaret naked

After receiving no response to her hello because Andrew Paxton is unable to hear her, Margaret Tate decides to walk out of the bathroom to get a towel, allowing Andrew Paxton to catch his boss naked. This is a real eye-opener for Andrew Paxton, as he learns that Margaret Tate is not such an "It" as he believed her to be. This really shocks Andrew Paxton, as he even needs to take time to process the fact that Margaret Tate showers naked like any other human being.

Andrew Paxton Likes to Prove Himself Right[]

Andrew asking about tattoo

Andrew asking Margaret about her tattoo

Andrew Paxton: "I'm pretty sure that you have a tattoo."

Margaret Tate: "Oh, you're pretty sure?"

- Andrew telling Margaret he knows about her tattoo

Andrew Paxton is a man who enjoys proving himself right, and does not stop trying until he has proven himself right. For example, Andrew Paxton keeps trying to prove that Margaret Tate has a tattoo. This trait of Andrew Paxton really stands out in the plane with Margaret Tate and also during his time together with Margaret Tate in Sitka, Alaska.

Margaret tattoo revealed

Margaret's back tattoo

As a secretary who knows almost everything about his boss, Andrew Paxton is well aware that the executive editor in chief of Colden Books has a tattoo. Andrew Paxton discovered this secret when Margaret Tate's dermatologist called a few years ago.

During the study session in the flight to Sitka, Margaret Tate asks Andrew Paxton if she has any scars. Andrew Paxton responds by telling Margaret Tate his deduction to why he is absolutely certain that she has a tattoo. Andrew Paxton's deduction is actually 100% correct; Margaret Tate indeed has a tattoo on her back.

Umm... Don't look, okay?"

- Margaret asking Andrew not to look at her

Despite knowing that Andrew Paxton's deduction is 100% correct, Margaret Tate refuses to admit that she has a tattoo. Moreover, knowing that her secretary suspects she has a tattoo only makes Margaret Tate more determined to keep her tattoo hidden by any means necessary.

Margaret Tate's determination to keep her tattoo a secret stands out during her first night with Andrew Paxton in Sitka, Alaska. Upon arrival in Sitka, Andrew Paxton and Margaret Tate are forced to share a room with each other. This causes Margaret Tate to feel uncomfortable because the only pyjamas she has are camisoles, which can expose her back tattoo.

During their first night together, Margaret Tate changes into her pyjamas in the bathroom. After changing into her pyjamas, Margaret Tate tells Andrew Paxton not to look at her when she exits the bathroom. Despite agreeing to Margaret Tate's request, Andrew Paxton disobeys her and looks anyway, which is likely an attempt to see Margaret Tate's tattoo. Fortunately, as a form of extra precaution, Margaret Tate decides cover her tattoo with her hair to keep her tattoo hidden in case Andrew Paxton looks at her.

- Margaret telling Andrew not to look at her

Besides Margaret Tate's first night in Sitka with her secretary, Margaret Tate also shows great determination to keep her tattoo safe from Andrew Paxton's sight during her second day in Sikta. This is during the moment when Margaret Tate tries to get a towel from the linen closet after her shower and gets caught by her secretary while trying to do so.

Andrew reenters bedroom

Margaret walking backwards to hide her tattoo

Realizing that she is naked in front of her secretary, Margaret Tate panics, as she is horrified that Andrew Paxton might seize the opportunity to look at her and see her naked from head to toe.

Horrified at the thought of Andrew Paxton seeing her naked, Margaret Tate forbids Andrew Paxton from looking at her. Despite being in her state of undress, Margaret Tate still remembers her exposed back tattoo. While telling Andrew Paxton not to look at her, Margaret Tate also decides to walk backwards away from Andrew Paxton to avoid exposing her back tattoo in case Andrew Paxton looks at her.

Despite Margaret Tate repeatedly telling Andrew Paxton not to look at her because of her state of undress, Andrew Paxton ignores her and seizes the opportunity to look at her. Before entering the bathroom, Andrew Paxton decides to prove to Margaret Tate that he is right all along by telling Margaret Tate, "nice tattoo, by the way."

Andrew Paxton is Somewhat Casual With Nudity[]

Andrew Paxton: "I don't understand. Why are you wet?"

Margaret Tate: "Why are you naked? DON'T look at me!"

- Margaret feeling ashamed of her state of undress

Attitudes toward nudity are dependent on many factors, such as culture, location, time and many others. Perception of nudity differs from individual to individual. In most cultures, appearing in the nude is considered indecent and most people around the world associate nudity with shame. Margaret Tate, for example, is a woman who associates nudity with shame. Despite being the most feared and fearless woman at Colden Books, Margaret Tate is afraid of being seen naked.

Andrew stripping on a balcony

Andrew Paxton, on the other hand, is a person who is somewhat casual with nudity. After ignoring Margaret Tate's hello from inside the bathroom because he cannot hear her, Andrew Paxton grabs a towel and heads straight to the balcony, where he starts to strip naked even though there are people outside who may be able to see him.

Amazingly, Andrew Paxton does not seem to fear being naked in front of others at all, as he does not have a problem being naked in the same room with a person of the opposite gender, Margaret Tate, who is terrified at the thought of being seen naked by her secretary.

Andrew Paxton Fights for Love[]

However, Andrew Paxton with his new found love for Margaret Tate, refuses to admit the truth.

- Margaret's goodbye note to Andrew

Andrew Paxton has an extraordinary eye for good books, Margaret Tate admits it herself after running away from the wedding, realizing that she cannot bring herself to ruin Andrew Paxton's life by forcing him to marry her. Margaret Tate knows that Andrew Paxton can be a good editor, but she refuses to promote him because she does not want to lose him as an assistant.

Andrew Paxton Has a Habit of Bringing up People's Embarrassing Moments[]

Andrew talks to Margaret in office

"Things changed when we kissed. And when you told me about your tattoo. Even when you checked me out when we were naked."

- Andrew bringing up Margaret Tate's embarrassing moment in the office

Without a doubt, Margaret Tate's most embarrassing moment is when she got caught naked by her secretary. Unfortunately for Margaret Tate, Andrew Paxton does not make it easy for her to forget that moment because of his habit of bringing up people's embarrassing moments.

After running away from the wedding, Andrew Paxton chases Margaret Tate from Sitka, Alaska all the way to the office in New York, so that he stop the woman he loves from leaving the country. While confessing his love to Margaret Tate in front of their colleagues, Andrew Paxton brings up Margaret Tate's embarrassing moment, causing Margaret Tate to feel embarrassed.
